JQuery and LAMP – A Great Match

JQuery and LAMP – A Great Match

Many LAMP developers traditionally prefer to shy away from heavy JavaScript utilization unless absolutely necessary, but jQuery opens up a variety of options that alleviate most of the former’s complexity. As a lightweight JavaScript library, jQuery can help solve many front end (view) coding challenges involved in meeting Web 2.0 design demands and cloud computing scale requirements. By design, the library can integrate seamlessly into the front end of applications with selectors tied to common coding elements to simplify presentation.

jQuery is by no means a newcomer to the industry. Since its release in 2006, the open source library has gradually gained reputation as an essential (and often “de facto”) front-end framework for dynamic navigation, rich media content and AJAX integration. In an environment where HTML5 and CSS3 are emerging as primary standards for both the desktop and mobile web, jQuery can provide an invaluable tool leveraging the best practices of document object modeling.

Working with jQuery in LAMP Applications
With its streamlined code and lightweight design (just under 80 KB in its “minified” edition), the script can add functionality to PHP applications with a minimal footprint. Adding the script to the header of your primary HTML section can help to retain fast load times and agile coding standards, even as you work to meet client requirements.

Developers are often challenged to keep applications lightweight while meeting brand standards and designer requests. jQuery provides a seamless bridge between the world of drawing boards, Adobe Illustrator and developer resource constraints. Even if you have avoided JavaScript in the past, it is worth considering investing in jQuery integration to get Web 2.0 design benefits using limited resources. Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight may provide attractive visuals but an integrated LAMP design with jQuery can improve load times, cross-browser compatibility and solve a variety of development challenges.

A Basic Use of jQuery
Functions within jQuery are bound by events and can be linked to CSS classes or HTML selectors by making calls to the jQuery API:

jQuery(document).ready(function() { jQuery(“a”).click(function(event) { alert(“Thanks for your submission!”); }); });

When triggered by an action, a wide variety of functions can be implemented with unique CSS or HTML object manipulation via the simple-to-use jQuery method calls. This allows you to add interactivity to your application without requiring large-scale images or Flash. As tablets and netbooks increasingly rely upon HTML as their standard language for rich media, jQuery becomes an essential toolkit for the LAMP arsenal.

A common implementation of jQuery can be seen where a user needs to remove an element after a basic interaction. One example of this might be removing a registration box after the user completes the form (with AJAX submission). All that is required is defining a couple of basic CSS classes and a jQuery function call that fades the registration box after a submit button has been clicked.

Beyond this basic implementation, jQuery libraries can handle nearly any type of front end animation or presentation demand. In a world where developers are required to render complex designs in a cross-platform setting, jQuery answers the call with authority.

Why Use jQuery?

Why Use jQuery?

More developers are looking at Javascript to add interactivity to their web sites. This is largely due to the popularity of the web 2.0 paradigm and Ajax as well as Apple’s rejection of Flash on its mobile browsers. Developing interactivity with Javascript has traditionally been challenging as the various browsers exposed their DOM differently. Javascript libraries were soon developed to hide the underlying details of cross-browser support and to simplify writing Javascript for interactivity. Today the leading Javascript library is jQuery. There are a number of compelling reasons to use jQuery in order to make your pages interactive.

Better Response Times
jQuery can make your pages far more responsive. The traditional method of waiting until a page is ready to begin running a script is to use window.onload. The problem with the window.onload function is that your browser will wait until the page, including all external resources, loads. If you have videos or flash files linked to your page, this can cause a considerable delay before your script will execute. jQuery, on the other hand, uses the (document).ready() utility function to determine when to begin executing scripts. This function waits only until the DOM is loaded which means that your web pages will be more responsive.

Unobtrusive Javascript
Another reason to use jQuery is to build unobtrusive Javascript. Unobtrusive Javascript is simply the separation of behavior from structure, just as CSS allowed for the separation of style from structure. In traditional Javascript, it was not uncommon to include code for behaviors in the HTML code. jQuery has a full event model that allows DOM elements to fire events which scripts can listen for. This allows the behavior of your elements to be removed from the HTML that defines their structure.

HTML Elements
jQuery also makes it very easy to select HTML elements to manipulate. It does this by wrapping the DOM model so that you can use selectors that are very much like the selectors used to style elements with CSS. For example, the selector “p a” in CSS would apply a style to all links that are contained within a paragraph tag. In jQuery, $ (“p a”).hide() will hide all links contained within a paragraph tag. The ability to select elements the same way that CSS does makes it much easier to learn jQuery.

Element Chain
jQuery functions return the elements selected. This means that you can chain jQuery functions in order to perform multiple operations on selected elements without having to reselect them. For example, to hide all divs with the class “HideMe” and then add the class “Hidden”, you would use the following code:

$ (“.HideMe”).hide().addClass(“Hidden”);

This chaining also makes jQuery scripts shorter in terms of lines of code. Most of the jQuery functions will act on all the elements selected which saves the need to write code to iterate over each element and perform an action.

Extensibility
Finally, jQuery is extensible. There is a robust system for writing plugins to help jQuery do more. Many new developers write plugins from the onset. There are also a wide variety of exiting plugins for jQuery which make it trivial to develop interactive galleries, product catalogs and more.

jQuery is an excellent library for building interactive web pages. It makes it easy to create unobtrusive Javascript and to select elements in the same fashion you already select them with CSS. It’s ability to be extended makes it even more powerful. This is why jQuery is the most popular Javascript library today.

10 jQuery Plugins for Your Site

10 jQuery Plugins for Your Site

Web design, like any type of design, moves through times when certain styles and paradigms are popular. Creating some of the currently popular visual effects can be a difficult task. Added to this challenge are a number of common problems that web developers encounter. Here are 10 jQuery plugins that will help you create stunning visual effects on your web sites and solve many common web application challenges.

Google Feed API Plugin
One common web development task is to include content from another web site or blog on a page. Often this is done in a sidebar or widget. Many blogs and web sites today use Google Feeds to deliver their RSS feeds. The Google Feed API plugin makes it trivial to access a Google Feed and retrieve items to display on your page. This plugin provides a high level interface to the Google Feed API for accessing the feed. After you get the contents of the feed, you’ll have to write code to use the items returned. This makes it possible to literally do anything with the data returned by the API.

Fullscreenr
A common design technique is to have a large background image that fills the browser window. Many web sites have examples of this design element. Fullscreenr is a jQuery plugin that makes it simple to scale an image so that it fills the browser window. This relieves the designer have having to worry about things like screen resolution. Fullscreenr will take into account aspect ratios and will scale a background image to fill the available area. It can also handle centering the the image.

jMagnify
jMagnify is a neat jQuery plugin that adds a level of mouse interactivity. When you mouse over a block of text, jMagnify will animate the text under the mouse pointer. This plugin has many options for creating interesting text effects. You can enlarge the font under the mouse to create the effect of running a magnifying glass over the line of text (hence the name). You can also change color, underline the text under the mouse pointer or put a box around the letters that moves with the mouse.

jQuery Validity
While a web site should never rely solely on client side form validation, performing validation on the client side can greatly enhance the user experience. Nothing is more irritating than to submit a form, wait a few seconds and then get an error that you didn’t use the right phone number format. JQuery Validity is a jQuery plugin that allows you to easily perform client side form validation. It includes a number of common validation techniques including required fields, ranges, match, non-HTML, maximum and minimum length and more. Validity also supports aggregate validators. These are validators that rely on more than one input such as when you retype a password to confirm the value entered.

jQuery SimpleColor
There really isn’t a whole lot to jQuery SimpleColor. It’s a plugin for creating a simple color picker. I’ve included it because color pickers are common user interface elements.

jPaginate
Pagination is a common web development task. While pagination can certainly be down on the server side, jPaginate creates an interesting visual approach to pagination. This plugin allows you to easily create a scrolling list of page numbers. When you mouse over the right or left arrow, the list of page numbers will animate, scrolling in the direction indicated. This makes it easy to browse through a set of pages without having to click an arrow and wait on a roundtrip to the server to see the links for the next 5-10 pages.

jQuery Rotator
This plugin is probably one of the simplest mentioned so far. It creates an animated effect where elements rotate up. While the demo of this plugin is pretty unimpressive, there are ways that this plugin could be quite useful. The demo shows text blocks rotating much like a news ticker, which is certainly one way this plugin could be used. However, since this plugin rotates elements, those elements could technically contain images, story summaries or any other content. This makes it possible to create interesting rotators highlighting different content.

dirtyFields
A common web development problem is how to let users now that a form or page contains unsaved changes. The dirtyFields plugin is one simple solution. This jQuery plugin saves the initial state of form fields and alerts users to unsaved changes by applying CSS styles to fields or even to the entire form. It also works with dynamically added fields.

jQuery Toggable
It’s a common web design technique to have a group of elements that can be hidden or displayed by clicking a single link such as “Show All” or “Hide All”. The jQuery Toggable plugin is a very simple lightweight plugin for implementing this type of behavior. It tracks the status of the toggable elements and animates them appropriately based on their current status.

Element Stack
Element Stack is a personal favorite of mine. I love the effect where a group of images on a web site looks like a stack of photos. Clicking the stack moves the images into a grid making it easy to view them. Clicking again returns them to the stack. Element Stack is a jQuery plugin for implementing this effect. While the effect is most often used on groups of images, it can be used to stack any element. You could create stacks of text or images. It’s a really cool animation effect that web sites are finding new and innovative ways to use.

One of the best strengths of the jQuery library is its ability to be extended through plugins. We’ve shared 10 of our favorite jQuery plugins for creating various effects or solving various web development challenges. Which ones do you use?
